Uduak Akpan Sentenced To Death By Hanging For Murdering Ini Umoren

Uduak Akpan, who was accused of murdering Ini Umoren, a job seeker in May 2021 has been found guilty by a court in Akwa Ibom state and sentenced to death by hanging.

According to BBC Pidgin, the sentence was handed down by Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Akwa Ibom state high court who tried him on two counts of rape and murder.

Document Women had earlier written on how Iniubong Umoren, was raped and murdered shortly after she sent a distressing message to her friend. Ms Umoren was laid to rest last year.

This happened after she tried looking for a job in the interim as she waited for mobilisation from the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Due to sustained outrage on social media, Akpan was arrested and it was revealed that Umoren was murdered shortly after being raped in an uncompleted building.

Commenting on the sentencing, Ukeme Umoren, the brother of the deceased, said that his family is happy now that his sister has gotten justice.

He further added that his sister would rest now and urged the government to support the family with jobs seeing as searching for jobs was what led to the death of his younger one.

The leader of the prosecuting counsel, Attorney General Uko Udom said that hopefully this judgement would bring some closure to the family of the late Ini Umoren.
