On Tuesday, dozens of Adamawa’s female politicians, professionals, and activists demonstrated against what they claim to be electoral fraud from Saturday’s gubernatorial election.
Remi Adiukwu, a leading female politician in Lagos state and a staunch member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led a group that issued a warning about attempts to subvert the decision of the people in the stymied governorship election results in Adamawa.
The group issued a unified statement in Lagos pledging their support for Aisha Dahiru, often known as Binani. It argued that INEC should recognise her as the winner of the Adamawa governor’s race.
The group urged INEC to act in a way that respects the dignity of women and is consistent with principles of equality and justice.
The organisation demanded an investigation into the allegations of widespread vote manipulation and vote inflation against Binani.
“In view of these allegations, we strongly advise that INEC should seriously scrutinise the purported results from Michika, Hong, and Madagali LGAs, where the governor camp and their collaborators came up with outrageous votes in their bid to suppress the people’s mandate freely given to Senator Binani.
“Binani is a giant of a woman and strong political soldier that fought her battle without fear, alone, with the support of the good people of the state.
“We resist the ongoing tactical attempt to rob her of her hard-earned mandate and call on all well-meaning Nigerians to oppose another attempt to deprive women of our place in governance and politics,” the group said.
Due to the margin of votes between the candidates of the two largest political parties in Adamawa State, APC and PDP, INEC ruled the election inconclusive.
According to Muhammad Mele, the state’s returning officer, no vote was cast in 47 of the wards spread out over the state’s 21 local government areas.
