Trigger Warning: Rape, Sexual Assault
Over the weekend, a young Nigerian woman (name withheld for privacy) was sexually assaulted after her shift. The incident occurred on her way home on Saturday, from a private station in Lapai, Niger State.
She received a call telling her to meet at Kobo Primary School in the community, located roughly 150 kilometers west of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, according to police.
Police spokesman, Abiodun Wasiu, told Peoples Gazette today that the attackers entered the school, drugged the victim, and then took turns raping her in a classroom.
“We are still investigating, and we are making efforts to arrest more suspects,” Mr Abiodun said. “Whatever the situation is, we’ll let the public know later.”
The assailants also took and searched her phone. On account of privacy, the victim’s contact is being kept hidden. However, a family member has stated that after medical attention, the victim would come forward.
The victim has identified one of her attackers, and police reported that two persons have been detained in the course of further investigation.
Mr Abiodun has stated that the investigation is ongoing and that efforts are being made to apprehend further offenders. “Whatever the situation is, we’ll let the public know later.”
