Even before its official release, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film has been a massive financial success.
The film’s distributor, AMC, claims that pre-sale ticket sales around the world have reached $100 million (£82 million) and that demand “has been incredible from the moment it was first announced.”
The company claims that the film broke its record for the biggest one-day sales in less than 24 hours.
Swift’s world tour, which is scheduled to continue until the end of 2024, is on course to become the most extensive in history. If ticket sales at stadiums hit $1.4 billion, they will surpass the record set by Elton John’s farewell tour.
The film of the Eras tour is expected to be released in theaters in more than 100 countries next Friday, October 13th, aligning with the pop star’s lucky number. It will be screened in 8,500 cinemas spanning 100 countries.
Experts predict that the film’s opening weekend in North America might bring in an additional $100 million at the box office, on top of the $50 million already made through pre-sales of tickets.
This year, five movies have opened in North America at over $100 million, including Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. In addition, in December, AMC will release a film documenting Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour.
Swift made history last year when she dominated the top 10 US singles list with songs in every slot. In September of 2021, she broke Drake’s record of having nine songs in the top 10 at the same time. In 1964, The Beatles had the most top 10 singles with eight.
According to Spotify, Swift attained a new milestone in August, becoming the first female artist in Spotify’s history to amass 100 million monthly listeners.
The announcement was made after her third re-recorded album, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), topped the charts in the United States and the United Kingdom in July.
Swift’s next re-recorded album, 1989 (Taylor’s Version), will be released later this month. She wants to have the original recordings of the songs on her albums, so she is re-recording them.
