UN Appoints Pauline Tallen as Committee Leader on Genocide Prevention.

The United Nations Office on the Prevention of Genocide has appointed Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Minister Pauline Tallen, as head of a Global Committee on Prevention and Genocide.

According to a report by Business Day NG, this was made known in Abuja by Alice Nderitu, the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General on Prevention of Genocide during a courtesy visit to the minister.

Ms Nderitu disclosed that the committee is expected to develop a framework analysing atrocities and genocidal acts that center the perspective of women in conflict situations, as according to her, the existing ones do not reflect women’s issues.

She explained that the document would play a vital role in informing the United Nations Policy of Peace Building and Prevention of Atrocity Crimes which may evolve into genocide.

Ms Nderitu further stressed the importance of women participating in decision making processes, especially in the areas of peace and conflict resolutions to ensure success and impact.

Responding, Ms Tallen thanked the UN for her consideration in providing leadership for a global assignment. She gave the assurance that Nigerian women would play our part in ensuring peace all over the world.
