Around The World In 5

This week, Document Women has gathered five stories from around the world on our continuous fight against patriarchal systems. 

United States of America

This week, the United States Supreme Court overturned the landmark case of Roe v Wade, giving individual states the power to set their own abortion laws, despite existing laws which permitted abortions during the first two trimesters of pregnancy.

Japan

This week, Japan continues to uphold its ban on same-sex marriage, claiming it is not unconstitutional. The Osaka court maintained that marriage was defined as being only between opposite genders and that not enough debate on same-sex marriage had taken place in Japanese society.

India

For the first time, women will be recruited as naval ratings in the Indian Navy. Since 1992, women have served as officers in the Indian armed forces but below officer ranks were out of bounds for women till recently.

Lebanon

This week, Lebanon saw a record number of women elected to parliament; 8 seats out of the 128 positions. Lebanon has one of the highest overall gender gaps in the world, ranking 145 out of 153 countries in the World Economic Forum Gender Gap report 2020.

Global

This week, Digital Camera World recognizes that those who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community don’t tend to get as much screen time or grace the covers of magazines in media as frequently as they should. A list has been compiled of photographers making waves in queer representation and demonstrating what being LGBTQIA+ looks like in 2022.
