England Beats Germany To Win 2022 Women’s Euro

The English women’s team has beaten Germany to win the 2022 Women’s European championships. This is their first major trophy as a women’s team and England’s major trophy at senior level since the 1966 men’s world cup.

According to BBC Sports, the women’s team beat Germany to a 2-1 in a football match held on July 31st that had star players like Sarina Wiegman and Keira Walsh.

During the press conference after the match, Wiegman paid a tribute to her sister who passed away in June saying:

“I’m kissing this little armband. It was my sister’s and she passed away earlier this year. I missed her but I think she was in the crossbar [when Germany hit the woodwork],” Wiegman said. “She would have been here. She went to every game. She would be really, really proud too.”

Commenting on the win and women’s sport in England, Alex Scott, a football player and former England and Arsenal defender said this:

“Back in 2018 we were begging people to host in their stadium the women’s games for these Euros. So many people said no. I hope they’re looking at themselves and thinking they weren’t brave enough.”

She went further to say: “I’m not standing up at corporate events begging for them to get involved in the women’s game. If you’re not involved, you’ve missed the boat. You’ve missed the train. It’s finally left the station. It’s gathering speed.”

Queen Elizabeth II sent her congratulations to the female team,  lauded them for inspiring the next generation.

“The Championships and your performance in them have rightly won praise,” the Queen said. “However, your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned.” You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations. It is my hope that you will be as proud of the impact you have had on your sport as you are of the result today.”

The finals saw a record crowd of 87,192 for a European Championship final.
