The Super Falcons of Nigeria have advanced to the next round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after a scoreless draw with Ireland, ending Ireland’s run in the tournament.
After Brosnan made a spectacular save on a Kanu header, the Super Falcons came close to scoring the game-winning goal by hitting the crossbar.
The Nigerian defence held firm, closing out all openings. Alozie made many dribbling runs down the right side, first playing a beautiful one-two with Monday (who backheeled the return pass), and then whipping the ball into the box from the byline, but no Nigerian players were there to meet it. Her terrific run deserved more.
The second-half Nigerian team was not the same as the first. The precision of their passing and movement was impressive, but they failed to score a goal.
After Australia’s easy win in Melbourne, Nigeria takes the second position in the group.
