Folashade Rafiatu breaks Olympic record, wins second gold for Nigeria

Folashade Rafiatu Lawal has won Nigeria’s second gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Rafiatu clinched the gold medal in the women’s 59kg category of the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Sunday.

Lawal lifted a combined total lift of 206kg – 110kg in snatch and 116kg in Clean and Jerk- to win the women’s 59kg weightlifting event and also set a new Commonwealth Games record.

Rafiatu’s victory comes hours after Nigeria’s Olarinoye Adenike Adijat won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Olarinoye recorded a total of 203kg, also setting the new Commonwealth Games record.
