Gudaf Tsegay, Faith Kipyegon, Sha’Carri Richardson Nominated for Women’s World Athlete of the Year 2023

Voting has begun for the World Athletes of the Year 2023 in anticipation of the World Athletics Awards 2023, which will be held later this year.

The eleven women that have been nominated for Women’s World Athlete of the Year have been officially confirmed by World Athletics. A team of athletics specialists representing all six continental areas of World Athletics deliberated and ultimately decided on these athletes.

The nominations highlight some of the outstanding achievements produced at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23, one-day meeting circuits, Label road races, and other events across the world in what has been another spectacular year for sport.

Women’s World Athlete of the Year candidates for 2023 are (in alphabetical order):

Tigist Assefa, ETH, marathon

  • Berlin marathon winner
  • World marathon record

Femke Bol, NED, 400m/400m hurdles

  • World 400m hurdles champion
  • World indoor 400m record

Shericka Jackson, JAM, 100m/200m

  • World 200m champion and 100m silver medallist
  • Diamond League 100m and 200m champion

Faith Kipyegon, KEN, 1500m/mile/5000m

  • World 1500m and 5000m champion
  • World records at 1500m, mile and 5000m

Haruka Kitaguchi, JPN, javelin

  • World champion
  • Diamond League champion

Yaroslava Mahuchikh, UKR, high jump

  • World champion
  • Diamond League champion

Maria Perez, ESP, race walk

The finalists will be chosen through a three-way vote.

Fans can vote online via the World Athletics social media platforms, while the World Athletics Council and World Athletics Family will vote via email. This week, graphics for each nomination will be posted to Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube; a “like” on one of these platforms, a “retweet” on another, or a “subscribe” on the fourth will each count as one vote.

The World Athletics Council’s vote will count for 50 per cent of the final outcome, the World Athletics Family’s vote for 25 per cent, and the public’s vote for 25 per cent.

On Saturday, October 28 at midnight, voting will end for World Athletes of the Year. World Athletics will unveil the top five women and top five men on November 13-14, following the conclusion of the voting process.

On December 11th, the results will be posted via World Athletics’ social media channels. In the coming weeks, further details will be released regarding the World Athletics Awards 2023.
