IBA WBC: Lovlina Wins World Women’s Boxing Championship, Celebrations Erupt In Assam

Assam’s chief minister Himanta Biswa leads the lengthy list of well-wishers and fans in celebrating Lovlina Borgohain after she defeats Caitlin Parker of Australia to win the world women’s boxing championship in the 75-kg division on Sunday night. Her home hamlet of Baro Mukhia in the Golaghat district bursts in celebration.
On Sunday in New Delhi, during the IBA Women’s Boxing Championship, Lovlina added the gold medal to her collection, following the bronze she won at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Her victory is not only the pinnacle of her career, but also the realization of the ambitions of her parents, friends, well-wishers, and other boxing enthusiasts and organizations.
Residents in her hometown, located about 320 kilometres east of Guwahati, were spotted singing and dancing to the tunes of Bihu songs and traditional music on the morning of Rongali Bihu.
Lovlina’s father, Tiken Borgohain, responded to her victory by saying, “I am confident right from the start that my daughter will definitely keep India’s flag flying high. This gold is not just for us, it is for the state and the country. It is the return we get from years of hard work Lovlina put in. I pray to God to bless her with more achievements and successes.”
Boxing Federation of India secretary general, Hemanta Kalita, praised Lovlina for her continued success, “The federation is proud of her. We hope more players like Lovlina will come out from Assam.”
Legislator Biswajit Phukan, whose electorate includes Lovlina’s village of Sarupathar, has declared that his longtime advocacy for the Olympic gold medalist has paid off. He said, “She is excelling in her career. I hope she has miles to go and we will always stand by her.”
