Kenyan Radio Personality Jahmby Koikai Passes Away After Battle with Endometriosis

Kenyan radio personality Fyah Mummah Jahmby Koikai has passed away after a prolonged battle with endometriosis.

Her friends and family confirmed her death on Tuesday morning while she was receiving treatment in the ICU at Nairobi Hospital.

Just three days before her passing, Koikai had publicly appealed for blood donations, requesting blood type O+ on her Instagram stories.

“Hi fam, I’m currently admitted at the pioneer ward Nairobi Hospital and I kindly need Blood O positive. Kindly asking for blood donors for Mary Njambi Koikai,” she wrote.

In a poignant message on social media, Koikai recently urged Kenyan leaders, especially President William Ruto, who was visiting the US, to invest in healthcare facilities specializing in endometriosis treatment.

Jahmby’s was diagnosed with endometriosis at the age of 13. The chronic condition caused her severe pain and complications throughout her life. In 2015, her condition worsened, leading to collapsed lungs and multiple surgeries to address thoracic endometriosis.

She underwent treatment locally and in the U.S. which cost her financially.

Her journey with endometriosis became a platform for advocacy and awareness, as she courageously shared her experiences on social media. Koikai shared her struggles with the disease, detailing how misplaced endometrial tissue caused her lungs to collapse monthly, necessitating numerous surgeries. She highlighted the 17 years it took to receive a diagnosis and the limited treatment options available in Kenya.

She bravely disclosed the extensive toll the disease took on her body, with misplaced tissue spreading to her teeth, heart, appendix, and spine. She also discussed the impact of endometriosis and adenomyosis on fertility.

Koikai’s final message was a call to action, raising awareness for the millions of Kenyan women silently suffering from endometriosis. She urged President Ruto to visit specific healthcare facilities in the US specializing in endometriosis treatment during his trip.
