Fatima Lamishi Adamu (PhD) is a Sociologist, Project Manager and a Women’s Rights Activist from Abuja.
She has over 20 years of experience advocating for women’s right to access and control over economic resources, quality health care and education in Northern Nigeria.
She currently runs NANA: Women and girls empowerment initiative which owns the first-ever female-managed garage in Sokoto.
Fatima Adamu has written many papers and thesis on Gender and Gender-Based Violence. She worked as the Convener of SURE-P MNCH From 2013 to 2015, a Federal Government Initiative aimed at reducing maternal mortality using savings from oil subsidy funds.
As the Executive Director of Nana Girls and Women’s Empowerment Initiative, Dr Fatima Adamu has created a network of Community-Based Organisations getting to hard-to-reach areas.
Fatima is notable in her engagements with the Executive and Legislative arms of governments in Northern Nigeria.
She obtained a PhD from the University of Bradford in 2000 and served as a lecturer at the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto. She has spent over two decades providing consultancy services and conducting research in areas of gender and women’s rights.
Her current interests are focusing on how to increase women’s economic opportunities by leveraging on climate action.
She also works as the National Programme Manager for Women for health. A DFID-funded programme that supports states in Nigeria to produce Female health workers and post them to primary health care centres.
The programme implemented in Borno and Yobe state-supported women from IDPs camps to enrol into Nursing and Midwifery training where 380 benefitted.
Fatima Adamu’s work has impacted many women’s lives in Northern Nigeria. NANA offers empowerment of young girls with education and empowerment of women through schemes like the mechanic workshop and fish farming.
