Meet Newly-elected 26-year-old Kwara State Legislative Member, Rukayat Shittu

Rukayat Shittu, a 26-year-old woman, was proclaimed the victor of the election for the House of Assembly in Kwara State.
During her time at the National Open University of Nigeria, Shittu served as Senate President of the Congress of Students.
Professor Hakeem Ijaya, the returning officer for Saturday’s House of Assembly election, announced that the 26-year-old candidate, who ran on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, had received 7,521 votes, surpassing the 6,957 votes received by her opponent from the Peoples Democratic Party.
When sworn in, Rukayat will represent the people of the Owode/Onire Constituency in the Kwara state legislature on behalf of the Asa Local Government Area.
Here’s a quick rundown of things to know about Shittu-
The 26-year-old has a certificate in both Mass Communication and Islamic Studies from Kwara State College of Islamic and Law Studies, which she attended after finishing primary and secondary school at Baptist LGA Primary School in Oku-Ire, Ilorin.
Shittu is a native of the Kwara State town of Manyan, which is in the Onire District. She is the only person from her town to ever hold a governmental office representing her constituents.
Being a graduate of Nigeria’s National Open University, she’s a credible third party. While her time as an undergrad, she served as a voice for her fellow students.
In addition to her work as the Publicity Secretary for the pro-democracy organization Kwara Must Change, Shittu was the first woman to serve as Senate President of the Congress of the Open University of Nigeria.
As you now know, the 26-year-old female candidate was just elected to represent the Owode/Onire Constituency in the Kwara State Legislature.
