Perpetua Nkwocha: Nigerian Football Icon, Record-Breaker, and Coach Extraordinaire

Nigeria boasts of superb women athletes: female footballers, swimmers and runners, who have broken records and set new ones.

Perpetua Ijeoma Nkwocha is a legendary Nigerian footballer who has left an indelible mark on the world of women’s football. Born on January 3, 1976, in Lagos, Nigeria, she has become an iconic figure in the sport, known for her exceptional skills, leadership on and off the field, and her contributions to the growth of women’s football in Nigeria and beyond. According to different sources, she has an estimated net worth of $2 million.

She plays as a forward/midfielder. She is currently the head coach of Swedish Women’s Football Division 2 team Clemensnäs IF; she previously played for Swedish side Sunnan SK. Nkwocha was a member of the Nigerian women’s national football team and its previous captain. Nkwocha has played for the Super Falcons in the Women’s World Cup and the Olympics. 

From 2007 until 2014, she represented Sunnan SK of Sweden in the second level (Elitettan) and the top division (Damallsvenskan). Nkwocha announced her intention to retire in two years, and the BBC reported in June 2008 that she wanted to be active in football after her retirement by working as a coach. She continued to compete in Sweden’s second-tier league as of 2012.

At the age of 39, Nkwocha made a significant career move prior to the 2015 season. She transitioned to a dual role as a player-coach for Clemensnäs IF, a team situated in the lower division (fourth tier). Notably, she had previously been involved in coaching boys’ football in Nigeria during a portion of the preceding season. However, she acquired Swedish citizenship, showing her desire to continue her football journey there.

Nkwocha has competed in seven CAF Women’s Championships while a member of the Nigerian national team (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014), winning five of them (2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, and 2014). She led Nigeria to victory in the 2004 African Women’s Championship final against Cameroon by scoring four goals. She was voted the best player in the competition and set a record by scoring nine goals in total during the event.

African Women’s Footballer of the Year Award was given to Nkwocha in 2011. She won the award four times: Confederation of African Football (CAF) named her African Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2004, 2005, 2010, and 2011. Nkwocha has also competed in the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008, as well as four FIFA Women’s World Cups (2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015).
