Muideen Adebisi, a suspected human trafficker, was apprehended in Ile-Ife, Osun State after he allegedly attempted to kidnap four teenage girls and take them to Libya.
This was confirmed by the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force. Yemisi Opalola, the public relations officer for the Osun State Police, said in a statement released on Monday that the suspect invited the victims to a birthday party in Ile-Ife, where he offered them food and drinks.
The teenagers ate and drank, fell asleep, and awoke in Kano State, where they were having their travel documents processed for Libya.
The police spokesman said that three of the victims escaped and made touch with their families after regaining consciousness. However, the PPRO stated that the whereabouts of the fourth victim was still unknown.
“The suspect (Muideen Adebisi), invited the young girls to a birthday party at a hotel in Ile-Ife and gave them food and drinks. After taking the food and drinks, the girls slept off and later woke up in Kano State en route to Tripoli, the capital of Libya,” Opalola said. “Three of the girls escaped miraculously in Kano and called their parents, who reported the matter to the police.”
“Three of the girls have been reunited with their families, but the whereabouts of the fourth girl were not known at the time of filing this report,” the statement read.
Police report that during questioning, the suspect claimed that all four girls voluntarily agreed to work in Libya and that the suspect’s brother, who lives in Tripoli, had instructed him to find women and deliver them to a man in Kano who would then transport them to Libya.
The police spokesperson further stated that Adebisi told them he encountered numerous girls who were being processed for the voyage to Libya when he arrived at the man’s house in Kano.
The PPRO promised a thorough investigation and said charges will be filed against the suspect as soon as possible.
