UI Law Student Detained In Connection With Student Rape

Security at the University of Ibadan’s Faculty of Law has detained a 200-level student on charges of rape against a 100-level colleague.

The victim and a group of other girls had gone out for night reading in order to prepare for exams.

Reportedly, the suspect assaulted the victim while she was taking a nap in the Students’ Union building after she left the lecture hall where she was reading because of a power outage.

According to the girl, who recounted her terrifying experience, the suspect held her neck down so she couldn’t cry out when she woke up at the slightest touch.

She said she was lucky when a student walked in, resulting in the suspect fleeing, although he was later caught. At the same time, the female student reported neck, lip, and private part injuries.

Joke Akinpelu, a spokeswoman for the institution, acknowledged the accusation and said that an investigation had been initiated.

“Yes. He (the suspect) was with the security unit until late yesterday (Tuesday). I’m not sure he has even been released,” Ms Akinpelu said.

According to her, the circumstance was communicated to the head of student affairs.

“The veracity of the allegation will be known upon completion of the investigation,” said Ms Akinpelu.
