Two women have been arrested by police in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam, for setting fire to a third woman.
Police have detained Nguyen Thi Diem Phuong, 23, and Dang Thi Thong Nhat, 44, after they were accused of setting fire to a woman, age 28. The identity of the victim is still unknown.
The event, which took place on a street in the Duy Xuyen District on January 26, was captured on video and uploaded online the following day.
The footage shows two attackers assaulting the woman in a residential area before one of them douses her in petrol and lights a match.
The footage shows the victim being burned alive. It was put out by some people in around 20 seconds. The unconscious woman was transported to a local hospital for emergency care by spectators.The woman is under care at Da Nang General Hospital.
The director of the Quang Nam Police Department, Major General Nguyen Duc Dung, has stated that “romantic jealousy” was the reason for the violence.
The department’s deputy director, Captain Nguyen Ha Lai, revealed that Phuong had suspicions that her husband was having an affair with the 28-year-old lady from Da Nang, which is located near the border with Quang Nam.
After Phuong and her mother-in-law saw her husband carrying a woman out of a karaoke bar on his back early on the morning of January 26, they raced over and began beating the woman. Phuong then poured 1.5 litres of gasoline all over the victim and set her on fire.
