During the Grammys preshow on Sunday, Viola Davis became the 18th member of the EGOT club, an acronym for those who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.
This accomplishment was sealed on Sunday night when she won her first Grammy for the audiobook of her memoir “Finding Me” in the best audiobook, narration, and storytelling recording category. This was her first time being nominated.
Davis, 57, stood up on stage and stated, “I wrote this book to honour the 6-year-old Viola. To honour her life, her joy, her trauma, everything. And it has just been such a journey. I just EGOT!”
Davis received the Emmy for best lead actress in a drama series for her work on the ABC show “How to Get Away with Murder” in 2015.
In 2017, she won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her work in the Denzel Washington-directed film “Fences,” based on August Wilson’s 1985 play of the same name.
With her 2022 Tony Award for co-producing the musical “A Strange Loop,” Jennifer Hudson became the last actress to complete the EGOT.
In an interview with the Recording Academy in January, Davis reflected on her career and Grammy nomination, noting that becoming an EGOT winner would be “a huge accomplishment.”
“I think that everybody wants their life to mean something,” she said. “I believe in the Cherokee birth blessing, which is, ‘May you live long enough to know why you were born.’ I do believe that you literally wanna blow a hole through this world in whatever way you can.
“A lot of people don’t know how to do that. A lot of people haven’t found that thing that they’re passionate about, that they can do. Some have. But we all are looking for that, blowing a hole through this earth before we leave it. I think about that in my work a lot. I really found that thing that I love to do. So I always wanna make it meaningful.”
