World Athletics Reaffirms Tobi Amusan’s Record-Setting Hurdles

World Athletics has officially recognised Tobi Amusan’s 12.12-second world record in the Women’s 100-meter Hurdles, which she set at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

The current development, which ratified the record set by Ms Amusan and other world records, was announced on World Athletics’ website.

She finished her race in 12.12 seconds in the Women’s 100m hurdles semifinal during the World Athletics Championships held in Eugene, USA, to win the race and set a world record, surpassing the previous world record held by American Kendra Harrison (12.20 seconds, set at the 2016 London Müller Anniversary Games).

At the finals on the next day, Amusan broke her own world record again with a time of 12.06 (2.5m/s) to win a gold medal in the event, although the timing was not officially recognised as a world record because it was wind-assisted.

This makes Amusan the first person from Nigeria to hold a Guinness World Record.

The global champion was honored last week by President Muhammadu Buhari, who presented her with the national honour of officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and a cash reward of N4.5 million for her recent accomplishments.

Recall that she was a two-time African Games 100m hurdles champion, as well as a two-time Commonwealth Games champion (2018 and 2022). In 2021, Amusan became the first Nigerian to win the Diamond League Trophy in the 100 m hurdles in Zurich; in the process, she broke the African record held by Glory Alozie at the time.
